Kozhikode: A literary corridor integrating Mananchira Square and the Public Library is set to redefine Kozhikode, blending literature, culture, and public spaces. The innovative project, part of the Urban Rejuvenation and Beautification initiative, aims to transform Kozhikode into a people-friendly city.
The Urban Rejuvenation and Beautification project was announced in the 2023–24 state budget. In the Kozhikode leg, it will be used for the continued development of the city as a literary hub.
A key highlight of the plan is the addition of a recreation centre near the Conolly Canal. The project will enhance the aesthetics of ponds such as Bilathikulam and Varakkal Thamarakulam. In a move towards sustainable urban development, a Miyawaki forest is also proposed.
Detailed project reports are being prepared for four key projects under this initiative. Authorities aim to complete these plans within a year.
The Urban Rejuvenation and Beautification project is being implemented in six corporations across the state, with Kozhikode, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram taking the lead. A total of Rs 300 crore has been allocated for this initiative, with Rs 100 crore assigned to each city.
Funding is provided by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), while Impact Kerala oversees the project.
