Thiruvananthapuram: LDF and the UDF will vehemently oppose Central government’s attempts to impose uniform civil code (UCC) in the country. Both parties view this as an attempt to impose Hindu religious laws on other religious groups.

Muslim League has openly expressed its disapproval of the implementation of uniform civil code. LDF and UDF terms it is a desperate attempt of the BJP to polarise votes ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. On the other hand, BJP accuses opposition parties of misleading people on the implementation of uniform civil code.

Explaining its stance against UCC, the Congress party says that India has diverse religious groups with different sets of religious laws, the party believes bringing all the religions under the umbrella of one set of rules, is not a practical decision. The party is of the opinion that in such scenarios discretionary powers shall rest with the respective religious groups.

Meanwhile, CPM members cite a 2018 commission report which suggests that implementing uniform civil code is not ideal for the country at the moment. The communist party instead vouches for more rights for women in every religion, which they believe would bring a better order in the society.

“People who respect the constitution will not oppose the implementation of uniform civil code. Both LDF and UDF are trying to mislead people on this matter,” said Union Minister V Muraleedharan, defending his party on the issue.
