Thiruvananthapuram: A little over 10,000 government employees are scheduled to retire in the state on Friday. According to data from the Service and Payroll Administrative Repository of Kerala (SPARK), a total of 10,560 employees will be retiring from their government services today. On average, around 20,000 government employees retire annually in the state.
Last year, the number of retirees on May 31 stood at 11,800. The significance of this date stems from the historical practice of registering May 31 as the date of birth when enrolling in school, predating the mandatory requirement of a birth certificate in Kerala.
This tradition has contributed to the phenomenon of mass retirements occurring on May 31 each year.
