Kasaragod: Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made the Lambda test mandatory for BS-4 vehicles to get a pollution certificate. Earlier, the rules were amended to mandatorily measure Lamba values for BS6 petrol vehicles.

Lambda is a measure of the ratio of oxygen in a vehicle to the amount of fuel it burns.
 
It is worth noting that the majority of licenced pollution testing centres in the state do not have lambda testing equipment. It will cost around Rs 35,000 to install.
 
If caught without a pollution certificate, the vehicle owner is bound to produce the certificate before MVD within seven days. Failure to do so will result in a fine of Rs 2000.  The state committee members of the Motor Vehicle Emission Testing Centre Association chaired a meeting with the state transport minister on Wednesday to discuss the issue. Based on this, the Transport Commissioner was directed to send a letter to the central ministry.
