Kannur: More than 3200 DNA samples, nearly half of which are in connection with POCSO cases, are awaiting tests in forensic laboratories across the state. The delay in carrying out tests is reportedly due to non-availability of concerned officers. It is learnt that tests are being conducted only for those cases which are of urgent priority, as directed by court orders. 

As per reliable reports, 950 DNA samples are pending at the regional forensic lab in Kannur. Of this, 500 samples are related to POCSO cases. Due to the absence of a DNA department here, tests are handled by the biology department, which comprises an assistant director and two scientific officers. 

DNA tests have not yet begun in the regional forensic lab in Ernakulam. Hence, the DNA samples brought are sent to Thiruvananthapuram for tests. The biology department at the lab in Ernakulam comprises an assistant director and a scientific officer. 

Meanwhile, in the Thrissur DNA division, set up in 2002, there are around 500 pending cases. In addition, another 1800 samples are pending at the state laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram, which also includes transferred cases from Ernakulam. 

It is learnt that the rise in samples is due to increasing number of DNA tests that are directed in connection with POCSO cases, murders and rapes. Apparently, the only feasible solution is to increase the number of officers accordingly.
