Thiruvananthapuram: The Finance Department will investigate the allegation made by MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's daughter, Veena, has not fulfilled her tax obligations.
On Saturday, Kuzhalnadan alleged that Veena and her company failed to pay GST on Rs 1.72 crore received from mining firm KMRL.
The Congress leader also requested Finance Minister K. Balagopal to release relevant documents if Veena and her firm had already paid the GST.
Kuzhalnadan had sent a complaint to Balagopal via e-mail detailing the same. Later, the finance minister's office confirmed that they had received the complaint.
The complaint will soon be forwarded to the tax department for verification. Since it relates to taxes, the government cannot avoid looking into it.
The law mandates that businesses involved in intra-state trade and service transactions pay Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST). The company or firm must pay taxes in the state in which it is registered, which will then be transferred to the central pool.
If taxes are not paid by the companies, the Union Government or the states involved have the right to take action.
Kuzhalnadan, representing the Moovattupuzha assembly seat, sought an explanation from the ruling CPM concerning the financial transactions between the mineral company and Veena's IT firm in a press meet held in Kottayam the other day.
"Her (Veena) IT firm received more money from the private mineral company. According to documents accessed by me, her company suffered a loss of more than Rs 63 lakh since 2014. According to documents, she invested around Rs 78 lakh to maintain her company," Kuzhalnadan alleged.
Recently, a controversy erupted in Kerala over financial transactions between a private mineral company and the Chief Minister's daughter Veena and her IT firm.
Evidence has also cropped up that showed that the company had dealings with top leaders of the ruling CPM as well as the opposition Congress-led UDF.
