Kuwait City: The death toll in the illicit liquor tragedy in Kuwait has risen to 23. Reports indicate that around 160 are currently hospitalised, majority of whom are Malayalis. The latest figures were released by the Kuwait Ministry of Health. Most of the deceased are Indian nationals, and one of them is reportedly a native of Kannur, Kerala.

According to the Indian Embassy, some of those receiving treatment are in critical condition, while others are reported to be stable. The embassy stated it is working closely with the Kuwait Ministry of Health to ensure the best possible medical care. Embassy officials also assured that all necessary assistance and support are being provided to the affected Indian nationals.

The tragedy happened last Saturday when several migrant workers fell critically ill after consuming locally produced illicit liquor. Victims had purchased the alcohol from a single source and consumed it at various locations. The Ministry of Health confirmed that 63 individuals from different nationalities are receiving treatment in hospitals including Adan and Farwaniya.

Among the patients, 31 are currently on ventilator support, while 51 have undergone emergency dialysis. Of these, 21 have suffered either complete or partial loss of vision. Reports indicate that victims include individuals from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.

The ministry has confirmed that all necessary medical care is being provided to those affected.

According to local media, the tainted liquor was purchased from Block 4 in the Al-Shuyoukh area. An investigation into the sale and distribution of the toxic alcohol is ongoing. Authorities have urged the public to report any suspected cases of individuals falling ill after consuming alcohol. The tragedy comes amid ongoing crackdowns and stringent measures against the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor in Kuwait.
