Kasaragod: A heartwarming story of unity and determination is unfolding in Kundur, a small village in Kasaragod district, where residents have joined hands to build a playground for their children.

When local youngsters voiced their desire for a space to play, the entire community stepped forward. A plot of 30 cents of land was identified for the project, purchased from a local resident at a reduced price of ₹30,000 per cent — below its market value of ₹40,000 per cent.

Within five months, villagers raised ₹10 lakh through an array of grassroots initiatives, with another ₹5 lakh still needed to complete the project by January 31. Contributions poured in from across the community, ranging from ₹500 to ₹25,000.

Women from the village collective made and sold jackfruit chips, raising ₹22,000. Meanwhile, the youth formed the Kundur Game Federation (KGF), hosting a “biryani challenge” that earned ₹72,000. They also collected and sold scrap from homes to add to the fund.

Every Sunday, a food stall named ‘Sunday Food Point’ operates near Mukkada Bridge from 3 PM to 10 PM. Groups including Kudumbashree, DYFI, and local men’s associations take turns running it, with cultural performances and competitions held alongside. Prize money from these events is donated to the playground fund.

In another initiative, villagers purchased fish worth ₹70,000 from Madakkara and resold it, earning ₹30,000 in profit. The women’s collective is now preparing to sell homemade pickles as part of the next fundraising phase.

A committee led by M. Chandran (Patron), V. Ambunji (Chairman), N. Vinod (Working Chairman), and V.G. Aneesh (Convener) oversees the efforts.

Through this collective mission, Kundur’s residents are not just building a playground — they are creating a symbol of community strength and shared hope for future generations.

Located in Karindalam panchayat, Kundur village is home to a tightly knit community where residents have long relied on collective effort for social causes.
