Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Students Union (KSU) has called for a state-wide education bandh on Friday in protest against the alleged police excesses during their Secretariat march. The bandh was announced following a clash between KSU activists and the police during a protest organised by the KSU state committee in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.
Several KSU activists were injured in the confrontation. The police used water cannons and carried out a lathi charge to disperse the protesters. In retaliation, some agitated students pelted stones at the police. Among those injured was KSU state president Aloysius Xavier.
The Secretariat march was held to protest what KSU described as the state government’s flawed education policy. The students' union raised slogans calling for the protection of Kerala’s deteriorating education sector.
