Kozhikode: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to roll out a new digital payment system for bus tickets across the state within the next month. This initiative, which has already seen successful trials in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts, is now being extended to services in all KSRTC depots.
Under the new system, passengers will be able to purchase tickets by scanning a QR code displayed on the electronic ticket machine carried by the bus conductor. Payment can be made using a variety of digital methods, including UPI and cards, and the funds will be transferred directly into KSRTC's main account. This digital payment option will also be available at ticket reservation counters and is expected to be fully implemented within the corporation in three months.
The digital payment system is set to launch in Kozhikode district by the first week of April to offer a seamless and hassle-free ticket purchasing experience. The introduction of the new system is designed to eliminate common issues, such as disputes over money change and the risk of carrying physical money. In addition, passengers will have digital proof of payment in case a ticket is lost during the journey.
KSRTC conductors are being equipped with new Chalo ticket machines, which will support various forms of digital payment. This upgrade was initially introduced on long-distance buses travelling from various districts to Thiruvananthapuram, including the popular Swift buses. The IT and administration departments are working swiftly to expand the system to other districts.
Benefits for passengers:
- - Avoids issues related to getting change or dealing with small denominations.
- - No need to carry cash for ticket purchases.
- - Ensures digital proof of payment, even if a ticket is lost.
- - Passengers can choose between digital payment and the traditional cash payment method.
P.S. Pramoj Shankar, Chairman and Managing Director of KSRTC, confirmed that all necessary preparations have been made to offer this service on all KSRTC buses within a month, making travel more convenient and efficient for passengers.
