The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has introduced a fleet of 24 new buses to enhance budget-friendly tourism in the state. These buses, equipped with modern amenities are prepared for a new boom in the tourism sector.

Currently, KSRTC's ordinary buses are utilised for tourism and sightseeing, but the new initiative aims to address complaints about bus shortages affecting travel. New e-buses are also planned to be launched in the next phase.

In the initial phase, three new bus services have been launched from Munnar, Kottarakkara, and Venjarammoodu. These services feature refurbished KSRTC buses with deluxe air-conditioned facilities, including pushback seats, charging points, and air suspension. The Budget Tourism Cell has organised 12,000 packages from various depots across the state, with 150 services scheduled for the Onam holiday season.

Bookings for these packages are completed months in advance, with services covering both small and large tourist destinations within the state. KSRTC estimates that in terms of income, it has crossed Rs. 3 crores in the first year and Rs. 16 crores by the end of the last financial year. They plan to expand service to inter-state travel.

KSRTC is also preparing to launch electric double-decker buses in December, aimed at city-centric travel. Initially, two such buses will be introduced, featuring an upper deck that can accommodate small parties and celebrations.
