Thiruvananthapuram: In an effort to avoid the clutter of overhead power lines in city streets, which occasionally pose a threat to the public, KSEB has approved a ₹176 crore project to relocate electric lines underground on selected roads in three cities. This initiative is part of a power distribution network modernisation programme supported by the central government.

The underground cabling will be carried out in the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode. The objectives are to improve pedestrian pathways, enhance the cityscape, and reduce electricity losses in the distribution network.

As part of smart city and other urban development initiatives, some areas in these cities have already had their power lines shifted underground. KSEB has now identified major roads not yet included in such projects. The plan also includes installing modern transformers and automatic systems to manage street lighting.

Thiruvananthapuram – Cost: ₹76 crore

  • MG Road from Attakulangara to Kowdiar
     
  • Overbridge–Thampanoor, around the Secretariat up to Statue
     
  • From Palayam via Muscat Hotel to LMS Hostel
     
  • Vellayambalam to Aalthara Temple
     
  • Vellayambalam–Sasthamangalam Road
     

Ernakulam – Cost: ₹74 crore

  • MG Road from Madhava Pharmacy Junction to Rajaji Road
     
  • Central Square Mall to Atlantis Junction
     
  • Atlantis Junction to Thevara Bridge
     

Kozhikode – Cost: ₹26 crore

Muthalakkulam–GH Road–MM Ali Road–Rammohan Road–Pavamani Road
