Balussery: When 14-year-old Anusree recuperated after surviving cancer, a new desire sprouted within her. The doctors who gave her love and care during the treatment days, inspired her to dream of a career in medicine. When Anusree got MBBS admission five years after she defeated cancer, she shared the glad news first with the doctors who treated her.

Anusree, who is the daughter of Narikkuni natives Premarajan and Sheena, was diagnosed with cancer when she was studying in the eighth standard. The symptoms appeared as swelling on her right leg and the disease was confirmed in the initial test itself. Soon her parents boarded a train to Thiruvananthapuram for treatment.

18 chemotherapy sessions and painful treatment procedures followed later and Anusree survived it all. Later the doctor informed the parents that Anusree’s right leg needs to be amputated to save her life. Then it was Anusree who comforted her parents in the extremely miserable phase of life.

After returning home, she started to go to school at the end of the ninth standard. She secured full A-plus grades in the final examination of the tenth standard. But she was again hospitalised when her amputated leg worsened and one more surgery was done on the same leg. She later left hospital with an artificial leg. However, she never felt lonely even in the Covid times. Her teachers and friends arrived whenever she needed any help.

Anusree secured a good rank in NEET and also with the help of the reservation for physically challenged, secured admission at the Govt Medical College, Kozhikode. Now she dreams of becoming an expert in cancer treatment or surgery.
