Kottayam: A shocking incident has come to light at Vaikom in Kottayam, where an 11-year-old boy, who sustained a head injury after falling inside his home, received stitches under the light of a mobile phone. The incident occurred at 4.30 pm on Saturday at Vaikom Taluk Hospital.

S Devathirthi,  the son of K P Sujith and Surabhi from Chemp Muri, fell inside the house, injuring the right side of his head. Due to excessive blood loss, his parents rushed him to Vaikom Taluk Hospital. The child was immediately taken to the emergency room to dress the wound. After some time, an attendant arrived and informed the parents who were waiting outside that there was no electricity and it was dark inside the room. The attendant asked the parents to wait outside the OP counter.

The child was moved back to the dressing room. When the parents questioned why there was no electricity, the attendant explained that the hospital did not keep the generator running continuously due to the high diesel cost when the power went out.

The child was then dressed and moved to the emergency department for stitches. However, due to the lack of electricity there as well, the doctor reportedly stitched the wound using the light from a mobile phone while Devathirthi was seated near a window, as alleged by the parents.

Devathirthi has two stitches on his head. The hospital authorities have stated that an investigation will be conducted regarding the incident. This follows another incident where six people, including hospital staff, were stuck for half an hour in the hospital's lift, which had malfunctioned weeks earlier.
