Kottayam: The Kottayam East Police have registered a case against DC Books in connection with the circulation of a PDF version of CPM leader E.P. Jayarajan's purported autobiography Kattan Chayayum Parippuvadayum before its official publication. The case lists A.V. Sreekumar, former publication manager of DC Books, as the first accused.

The ADGP in charge of law and order had recently instructed Kottayam District Police Chief A. Shahul Hameed to take action on the matter. The case was filed based on a preliminary report, invoking charges of breach of trust and violations under the IT Act related to the digital copy leak. Following the controversy, DC Books had earlier suspended A.V. Sreekumar.

On Friday, a preliminary inquiry report on the autobiography controversy was submitted to the State Police Chief by Kottayam SP. The report indicated that the autobiography was leaked from within DC Books. However, it also noted that the police cannot directly register a case since the matter falls under copyright law. The report explained that only if the author approaches the court and the court issues instructions can the police proceed further. Despite this, the case was registered following a directive that no specific complaint is required to initiate action.

E.P. Jayarajan and Ravi DC (of DC Books) informed the police that no one was authorised to publish the autobiography and that no formal contract had been signed regarding publication. However, they acknowledged that there was an understanding about its publication.

The police found that the book was leaked by the head of DC's publication division. The initial report on the matter was returned by the State Police Chief for further investigation. Subsequently, the District Police Chief submitted another report, pointing out that the issue falls under the jurisdiction of copyright law. It is said that the report does not include a clear explanation regarding a conspiracy behind the leak.
