Kochi: The High Court has directed strict action against drivers who speed through zebra crossings without regard for pedestrians, including possible license suspension for repeat offenders.

Steps for enforcement
- Following the directive, Transport Commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam has ordered officials to:
- Suspend licenses of drivers who intimidate pedestrians by speeding or honking at zebra lines.
- Ensure vehicles stop at least three meters ahead of a zebra crossing once pedestrians step onto it.
- Take action against vehicles parked on footpaths or zebra crossings.
- Impose fines of ₹2,000 for violations.
Awareness and accountability
Authorities are tasked with creating awareness among drivers that pedestrians have the right of way at zebra crossings. The court’s move underscores a broader effort to reduce accidents and improve road safety in Kochi.
