Kochi: Police remain unconvinced by the statement given by the mother arrested for allegedly killing her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter by throwing her into a river in Kochi, Kerala.

When questioned, the mother simply responded, “I went to throw my child into the river.” She repeated the same statement multiple times, showing no change in expression or emotion. Her demeanour has raised further concerns for the police, who had already begun to suspect that she may be suffering from mental health issues. Authorities are now moving towards a more detailed investigation into her psychological state.

While the police have found that a close relative of the father was sexually abusing the child, they have not yet been able to ascertain if the mother was aware of this. The mother has not yet told the police anything regarding the abuse. What bothers the police is why the mother might have thrown the child into the river in such a situation. The mother's replies to the questions are precisely what is raising police suspicions about her mental health.

The statements the police get from the mother in this regard are very crucial. The police say that the accused had been abusing the child for over a year. If that is the case, it is not believable to the police that the mother was unaware of it for so long.

The police have found that the family environment was chaotic due to the discord between the child's parents. The police believe the accused took advantage of this. Neighbours also say that the accused was someone the child was very close to.

The child’s grandmother had said that the mother was facing domestic abuse. They complained that her husband used to beat her daughter. The police are also thoroughly examining these matters. Along with further questioning the mother who has been taken into custody, the police will also present her for medical examination.

On Friday, evidence will be collected from her husband's house in Puthencruz, the bridge at Moozhikkulam from where the child was thrown into the river, and her own house.
