Kochi: Five children from a private school in Kalamassery are suspected to have contracted cerebral meningitis. The seven- and eight-year-old students sought medical attention at two private hospitals in Kochi after suffering from severe headaches and vomiting. The hospital authorities reported that their health conditions are currently stable.

The children were initially suspected to be suffering from encephalitis after undergoing preliminary tests. However, there has been no official confirmation of the diagnosis yet. Two of the children have been admitted to the ICU for observation, though hospital officials reassured that there is no cause for immediate concern regarding their health.

In response to the outbreak, the primary-level exams at the affected school have been postponed. Parents have been advised to keep children at home if they show any symptoms such as headaches or vomiting.

District Medical Officer Dr. Asha Devi has sought to calm public concerns, stating there is no need to worry at present. However, she advised that those who have come in contact with the sick children remain vigilant and take precautions, including wearing masks.
