Kochi: The temporary stage at Kaloor Stadium in Kochi, standing at a height of 15 feet, from where Thrikkakkara MLA Uma Thomas fell down sustaining head and spinal injuries, lacked a secure barricade in front. Instead, ribbons tied to occasional metal posts were used. In front of the seating arrangement for VIPs, there was barely enough space for one person to stand.
The 28-foot-wide and 54-foot-long temporary stage for VIPs was constructed above the permanent seating area near the main entrance of the stadium. The stage was divided into two levels, with approximately 30 chairs arranged for distinguished guests at the front and a performance area at the back for cultural programmes.
It was from below this stage that people rushed to move Uma Thomas to an ambulance. At that moment, many were unaware that it was Uma Thomas. A large stage for media personnel and cameras directly in front of the VIP stage obstructed visibility. As a result, the crowd in the stadium was unaware of the accident.
Despite the incident, the programme continued for some time. However, the remaining cultural programmes were later cancelled, according to Mridanga Vision directors Nighosh Kumar and Shameer Abdul Raheem. They stated that the mega dance performance continued after the accident because dancers and their guardians had travelled from distant locations.
The event management company, Ozla, represented by Jinesh, claimed that all necessary approvals, including from the Fire Department, had been obtained.
Police Investigation Underway
City police are investigating whether there were lapses in ensuring safety during the event. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) K S Sudarshan and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) P Rajkumar visited the scene. The police have assured that action will be taken if any security lapses are identified.
