Kochi: The construction of the second phase of the Kochi Metro has officially commenced. In this phase, work will extend from Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad. The piling work began on Wednesday in Kunnumpuram.
After a prolonged period of uncertainty, construction on the Kakkanad route is now underway. The new route spans 11.2 kilometres from Kaloor Stadium. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has announced that construction is expected to be completed by March 2026. The estimated cost for this phase is Rs 1,957 crore.
The construction is being led by Afcons Infrastructure Limited. Initial test piling is being conducted, with further piling to proceed following evaluation.
This route is considered one of the most crucial lines of the metro network. The project faces several challenges as construction needs to be carried out through a densely populated stretch. KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera assured that all potential issues will be addressed.
Construction will take place within barricades once they are set up, with detours established to manage traffic during this period. Preparatory work, including road widening, has already begun.
