Kochi: The Ernakulam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ruled that a complaint filed over the non-provision of free gravy alongside beef fry and parotta is not maintainable.

The complaint was filed by a resident of Ernakulam against a hotel in Kolenchery, alleging that the establishment refused to provide complimentary gravy with their order.

According to the complaint, the individual and a friend had visited the restaurant in November 2024 and ordered beef fry and parotta. When they requested gravy to accompany the meal, the hotel owner informed them that it was not available as a complimentary item. Dissatisfied, they lodged a complaint with the Kunnathunadu Taluk Supply Officer.

Following the complaint, both the Supply Officer and the Food Safety Officer conducted an inquiry. Their report stated that it was not the restaurant’s policy to provide gravy free of charge. The complainants then took the matter to the Consumer Commission.

The bench, comprising Commission President D.B. Binu and members V. Ramachandran and T.N. Srividya, held that the complaint could not be entertained. The Commission observed that the restaurant had neither promised to provide gravy for free nor charged the customers for it.
