The 71st Nehru Trophy Boat Race unfolds in Alappuzha with thrilling races and vibrant celebrations.

Alappuzha: The iconic Punnamada Lake has come alive once again as the 71st Nehru Trophy Boat Race kicks off in all its glory. The air is thick with excitement, as the festival of oars, rhythm and tradition officially began with Tourism Minister P A Mohammad Riyas declaring the event open. Zimbabwe's Deputy Minister Rajesh Indukant Modi also graced the occasion, adding a global touch to the celebrations.
While Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan could not attend the opening ceremony, the grandiosity of the event remains unshaken. The Nehru Pavilion became a hive of activity as dignitaries, excited spectators and boatmen gathered to witness the ceremonial mass drill — a stunning salute from the boats that left the crowd in awe.
Meanwhile, a boat Naduvileparambil Chundan capsized during the race.
This year, 21 majestic Chundan Vallams (snake boats), each a symbol of Kerala’s maritime legacy, are all set to battle it out for supremacy. The atmosphere is electric; synchronised oars cutting through the water, rhythmic chants echoing across the lake and the thunderous roar of applause from the crowd have turned Vembanad Lake into an epic stage for this annual water fest.
The heats will begin at 3 pm, with the Anari Chundan leading the charge for the opening race. The stakes are high and the competition fierce, as fans eagerly watch on.
In addition to the thrilling snake boat races, the finals of the smaller boat categories are adding more excitement to the already-charged atmosphere, making this a day of non-stop action. Mepadan, the favourite, has already garnered a huge following, but Payipadan is not far behind, keeping fans on edge with each passing moment.
As the clock ticks down, the anticipation builds. The next three hours could well define the champions, with every splash of the oar holding the potential to turn the tide.
A spectator sums it up perfectly, "May the water fest unfold peacefully and gloriously," echoing the hopes of thousands who have gathered to witness this exhilarating event.
