Aalappuzha (Kerala): The waters of Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha district are primed for the thunderous cadence of oars on Saturday as rowers compete in the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race.

A total of 71 vessels, including 22 iconic raised-prow snake boats, known locally as Chundan Vallams, will clash in front of thousands of spectators.

The aquatic spectacle traces its origins back to 1952 to mark the visit and lake journey of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

District authorities confirmed that inter-departmental preparations have been completed to manage the scale of the event. The winning prize money has been increased to ₹25 lakh this year.

In addition, the administration has introduced a distinct colour scheme and engaged an external event management firm to assist in executing the regatta.Under updated event directives, out-of-state rowers are restricted to a maximum 25 per cent quota per crew, with officials warning that rule breaches will carry strict penalties. Security measures include the deployment of approximately 1,700 police personnel, alongside an explicit ban on unauthorised drone operations over the racing area.

To facilitate travel for attendees, special operations will be run by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) alongside the State Water Transport Department.
