Malappuram: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has maintained a cautious stance regarding the official announcement of the next Chief Minister. Following a leadership meeting, P K Kunhalikutty stated that the party is awaiting the final decision from the Congress High Command in Delhi before offering a formal response.

Speaking to the media, Kunhalikutty noted that a week’s delay in such high-stakes decisions is natural. "We are waiting for the word from Delhi. The High Command has not contacted the League yet. We expect a decision on the Chief Minister post today. Once that is relayed, we will deliberate within our leadership to decide the way forward," he said.

Kunhalikutty remained tight-lipped when questioned about which candidate the League supports or how the party would react if the High Command’s choice contradicted their preferences.

While the IUML had previously backed V D Satheesan for the top post, current signals from Delhi suggest a growing momentum in favour of K C Venugopal. Observers suggest that while the League is unlikely to break ranks, a choice against their preference might trigger internal discontent.

Addressing concerns over the delay in government formation, Kunhalikutty dismissed fears of a power vacuum. "There is no administrative standstill in the state. The bureaucracy is well aware that the UDF is set to govern, and they won't be seeking orders elsewhere. No one needs to worry about that," he added.
