Thiruvananthapuram: A consultancy firm will be appointed to study and explore the potential for industries and associated developments related to the Vizhinjam port, as well as to oversee these projects. Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) will be responsible for hiring the consultancy on behalf of the state government to examine the various matters.

The government aims to create a port-based industrial sector in Kerala through Vizhinjam. The primary focus of the study will be to determine the extent to which the Vizhinjam port can contribute to the state's economic growth.

Leading companies in the country participated in a pre-bid meeting held in preparation for the consultancy appointment. They can submit tenders until 29 August. The consultancy term will span one year, divided into multiple phases. The study will also include models of successful port-based economic sectors from around the world.

The consultancy will prepare packages to attract major business establishments in the country, identify sectors with potential for export and import industries, and assess the types of companies that could potentially operate here. The consultancy will recommend measures for the development of infrastructure in the port sector. This will involve identifying land, the need for creating special economic zones, legislation to improve the industrial environment, and ensuring the availability of electricity and water.

The consultancy will also study the special economic zone that will be developed as part of the Outer Ring Road project. Reports on projects with central government financial support will also be provided.
