Mannuthy: A team of experts from the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences here rescued a pet monkey whose life was in danger due to pregnancy-related complications. The monkey was saved by a surgical procedure and this is the first time a surgery of this kind is happening in Kerala.

The three-year old monkey has been reared by a license holder from Kunnamkulam. It weights half a kilogram and is a combination of black and white colour.

The monkey delivered two healthy offspring in her two deliveries earlier. However, her third pregnancy had many complications. However, this came to light during the delivery time only. The monkey showed serious discomfort and the owner rushed her to the hospital.

In the ultrasound scanning it came to light that the three babies she conceived was not alive. According to the veterinary experts here, the major complication was that uterus did not expand to accommodate the babies.

Though experts administered medicine for the delivery, the attempt was not fruitful. The experts then conducted a C-section to take out the babies.

Usually, in such C-sections, saving life of mother and offspring is a rare possibility. However, the experts managed to save the life of mother.

Experts in the animal reproduction wing of the veterinary college led the surgery. The wing chief Dr C Jayakumar and assistants Dr Hiran and Dr Magnus Paul were involved in the procedure.
