Kalpetta/Mananthavady: As the festive season of Vishu and Easter approaches, there is welcome news for households across Kerala: the vegetable market has remained stable, with no major price hike. Despite the usual surge in demand during this period, prices have stayed within an affordable range, bringing relief to consumers.

Shops in local markets are bustling with activity, and all essential items are available at moderate prices. According to traders, while there has been a slight increase in the prices of a few vegetables, the market overall remains steady.

The wholesale price of yard-long beans and regular beans is currently Rs 75 per kg, with the retail price at Rs 85. Bitter gourd is being sold at Rs 70 per kg wholesale and Rs 80 per kg retail. Lemons, however, have seen a noticeable rise, with prices touching Rs 120 per kg.

T. Harris, owner of Zam Zam Vegetables in Kalpetta, noted the slight price hike in some items due to reduced production and higher demand. Abu Tahir, owner of ABT Vegetables in Mananthavady, said the market has picked up momentum since Friday. “We expect even more rush on the eve of Vishu,” he added.

Vishu, a major Hindu festival celebrated in Kerala, is known for the ritual of preparing the "Vishu Kani" — a traditional display of auspicious items like vegetables, fruits, flowers, rice, and other symbolic offerings. Vegetables such as kani vellari (golden cucumber), beans, and yam (chena) are considered essential for this ritual, leading to a spike in demand every year.

However, unlike in previous years, the increased demand this time has not translated into soaring prices. With all necessary vegetables still available at affordable rates, festive preparations can continue without placing an extra burden on shoppers.
