Kottayam: What was expected to be a major headache turned out to be a blessing for Supplyco during Onam, thanks to coconut oil sales. From August 1 to September 4, the corporation sold 22 lakh litres of coconut oil, generating a revenue of ₹74 crore.

When prices were feared to cross ₹500, the government intervened, holding talks with oil traders and copra dealers to ensure price control. At the time, copra was selling at ₹280–₹290 per kg. A surge in copra procurement by China had pushed global oil prices upward.

However, by mid-August, copra prices began to drop, which was soon reflected in coconut oil rates as well. The price of coconut oil under Kerafed, which stood at ₹529, was reduced to ₹479. Kerafed supplied coconut oil to Supplyco at wholesale rates. With copra suppliers for the Sabari brand also cutting prices, Supplyco slashed the price of Sabari coconut oil twice.

The rush of customers to Supplyco outlets for coconut oil drove up overall sales. In addition, the decision to provide 20 kg of rice at ₹25 per kg further stabilised the market. Between August 1 and September 4, Supplyco achieved revenues of ₹386.19 crore—the highest in its history. Last Onam, the profit had been ₹163 crore. Minister G R Anil stated that efforts are being made to further reduce prices of as many commodities as possible in line with market changes.
