Kerala to seek compensation from MSC over ship accident, citing long-term environmental and fisheries impact

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has formally conveyed to the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) that the ship accident off the state coast has resulted in long-term environmental damage and economic loss. Officials from MSC visited the state capital for discussions with Chief Secretary Dr A. Jayathilak regarding the aftermath of the incident.
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary informed MSC that the accident had harmed Kerala’s marine ecosystem and fish wealth. It had also disrupted the livelihoods of local fishermen. The state is currently assessing the full extent of the damage, including its implications on the export sector.
MSC Managing Directors Deepak Krishan Tewari and Captain Mahendra Bhasin attended the talks. Angela Pinzón, Chief Scientist from the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Limited (ITOPF), was also present. ITOPF provides expert advice on handling marine pollution, oil and chemical spills.
The Kerala government has made it clear that MSC will be required to bear the expenses incurred in the state’s mitigation efforts post-accident. As part of this, compensation will be sought under relevant international maritime laws. The Chief Secretary confirmed that the necessary preparations to initiate this process are already underway.
