Kochi: The atmosphere at Maharaja's College here on Monday was buzzing with energy as the Kerala State School Sports Meet officially kicked off.

The event was inaugurated by Education Minister V. Sivankutty, who emphasised the importance of sports in education. Former Indian hockey captain and Olympic medalist P.R. Sreejesh joined him as the brand ambassador, while actor Mammootty attended as the chief guest. Interestingly, the actor delivered a notable speech.

Mammootty affectionately referred to the budding athletes as “My dear Thakkudus” (my dear ones). It is noteworthy that the sports meet mascot is ‘Thakkudu.’

"The power of youth in Kerala is surprising. There's a lot of hope; we have unwavering faith in each of you," the actor said.

He encouraged the young athletes to view their competitors as friends, not enemies.

“Don't see your competitors as enemies; view them simply as fellow competitors. Let this mindset be reflected in your behaviour and speech,” he added.

“May you all be the pride of this country with not just one medal but 100 Olympic medals,” Mammootty said.

He also shared how he perceived sports in his childhood. “In my childhood, I used to participate in theatre instead of attending such sporting events,” he said in a self-pitying tone. He expressed a desire that if he had a chance to relive his childhood, he would have engaged in sports meets like these.

Events and Inclusivity

Starting on Tuesday, athletes will compete in a variety of sports, including athletics, inclusive athletics, badminton, football, and throwball. Along with medals and certificates for the victors, the district that accumulates the most points will receive the coveted Ever Rolling Trophy, named after the Chief Minister. In a nod to Olympic traditions, winners will also be presented with olive leaf crowns, symbolising their achievement and excellence.

This year's meet is particularly significant as it welcomes participants with special needs and children from the Gulf, offering them a chance to showcase their talents alongside their peers from Kerala.
