Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is likely to witness widespread summer rainfall, bringing much-needed relief from rising temperatures.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for multiple districts, warning of moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms in the coming days.

Rain brings relief from heat

Amid heatwave-like conditions in parts of Kerala, summer rain is expected to provide temporary relief. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall across several regions, easing high daytime temperatures.

Yellow alert districts today

A yellow alert has been issued for the following districts on April 29:

  • Thiruvananthapuram
  • Kollam
  • Pathanamthitta
  • Kottayam

These areas may experience moderate rainfall with the possibility of isolated heavy showers.

Districts likely to receive rain and thunderstorms

The IMD has predicted:

  • Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Ernakulam and Thrissur
  • Strong winds reaching up to 40 km/h in isolated areas
  • Light rain in parts of Alappuzha and Ernakulam

Upcoming alerts

Further alerts have been issued for the following days:

  • Yellow alert in Kannur and Kasaragod on April 30
  • Yellow alert in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Wayanad on May 1

These regions may experience isolated heavy rainfall.

What ‘heavy rain’ means

According to IMD classification, heavy rainfall refers to: 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain within 24 hours

While temperatures are expected to remain high during the day, intermittent rainfall is likely to bring short-term cooling. Some parts of central and southern Kerala have already recorded isolated rainfall earlier this week.
