New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra voiced sorrow on Sunday over the widespread destruction wrought by torrential downpours across Kerala, which have claimed eight lives and forced thousands from their homes.

In a message published on X, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated, "My heart goes out to the people of Keralam affected by the devastating rains. My deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones. I pray for the safe return of those who are missing and a speedy recovery for the injured."

She continued, "In this difficult hour, the Congress-led UDF government is on the ground carrying out relief and rescue work. I urge all Congress and UDF workers to stand with those affected and extend every possible support."

Earlier in the day, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also articulated his grief regarding the calamity affecting the southern state.

Writing on X, Rahul Gandhi noted that the state administration is deploying every available resource to assist impacted households and orchestrate rescue and rehabilitation measures.

"Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by heavy rains across Keralam. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the eight people who have lost their lives. May those still missing be found safe, and the injured make a swift recovery. The state government is making every possible effort to support affected families and coordinate relief and recovery operations. I urge all Congress workers and volunteers to assist these efforts in every possible way. Please remain vigilant, especially in the hilly regions, and follow the guidance of the authorities. Keralam stands united in this difficult hour. I stand firmly with every affected family," he posted.

State statistics indicate that eight individuals have perished, eight remain unaccounted for, and 13 have suffered injuries stemming from storm-linked incidents.

A cumulative total of 5,792 citizens have been relocated to 209 designated relief shelters across the region. Furthermore, 27 dwellings have been completely ruined, whilst 196 properties have sustained partial structural impairment.

An official communique noted that Chief Minister VD Satheesan remains in constant communication with cabinet ministers overseeing various districts and local administrators to monitor the weather crisis.

Precipitation levels have eased relative to the preceding day, offering a measure of respite. Sanitation and clean-up initiatives have commenced within inundated districts, with political cadres and charitable entities invited to join the scrubbing efforts, backed by state-assured assistance.

Residents inhabiting elevated terrain have been advised to maintain caution. While rainfall has abated, authorities confirmed that all contingency protocols remain primed to address potential emergencies.

The bulletin added that elected officials and civic volunteers are deeply involved in relief administration, advising the public to utilise official channels for any necessary aid.
