The Kerala Police have found themselves on the other side of a rule they are expected to enforce, with the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation imposing a Rs 15,030 fine on the State Police Chief over flex boards allegedly placed in public spaces in the city.

The fine was issued on September 15 by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation secretary to the State Police Chief.

The civic body alleged that flex boards had been put up at public places in PMG and Vazhuthacaud as part of a police sports event held in the capital a few weeks ago.

The action was taken in line with a Kerala High Court direction concerning the removal of flex boards from public spaces.

The directive also calls for fines to be imposed on those responsible for putting up such boards, officials said.

Police sources said the State Police Chief subsequently forwarded the corporation's fine notice to the organisers of the sports event.

They were also directed to take the necessary steps in connection with the civic body's action.

The development comes months after the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation took similar action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over flex boards.

In January this year, the civic body imposed a fine of Rs 19.7 lakh on the party for allegedly putting up flex boards in the city ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit following the BJP's local body election victory in the state capital.

The latest action has brought the Kerala Police themselves under the scrutiny of the same civic regulations governing the use of flex boards in public spaces.
