Thiruvananthapuram: The state budget has outlined plans for the comprehensive development of major pilgrimage centres in Kerala, aiming to upgrade them to international standards on the lines of Tirupati.
Temples at Sabarimala, Kottiyoor, Guruvayoor and Thiruvallam will be developed into international-standard national pilgrimage centres, Finance Minister V.D. Satheesan announced. The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen religious tourism infrastructure in the state.

Special emphasis has been placed on improving temple facilities and associated infrastructure. As part of this, ₹5 crore has been allocated for the renovation of sacred groves and ponds adjacent to temples. An additional ₹5 crore has been set aside towards the annual annuity payment to the Travancore Devaswom Board.
The Minister also announced measures to enhance the efficiency of the Malabar Devaswom Board and grant it greater powers, similar to other Devaswom boards. Special regulations will be framed for this purpose.
Another key announcement includes an increase in the grant provided to the 52 Palliyodams participating in the Aranmula boat race, raised from ₹10,000 to ₹15,000.
The budget further includes allocations for cultural and spiritual projects. ₹1 crore has been sanctioned for the installation of a Sree Narayana Guru statue in Delhi, while ₹10 crore has been allocated for the renovation of Thekkinkadu Maidanam in Thrissur.
