Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government is looking for alternative measures other than load shedding to overcome the power crisis. Although the power consumption has increased steeply in the searing heat, it is decided to resolve the issue with the cooperation of the public. The decision comes in the wake of a report submitted by the KSEB on ensuring power conservation measures.

The government has put forward some suggestions to ensure cooperation from the part of the electricity consumers. As part of the same, the large industrial consumers will be asked to regulate their power consumption between 10 pm and 2 am. The Water Authority will be asked to regulate its pumping time and to avoid lift irrigation during peak hours. Shops will be urged to avoid using decorative lighting and other power consuming lamps after 9 pm.

Domestic consumers will be asked to keep the AC temperature above 26 degrees Celsius, besides urging them to avoid unnecessary lights and electrical appliances when AC is working.
Deputy engineers were entrusted with field level regulations. After two days’ evaluation, the KSEB will submit another report to the government.
Meanwhile, the power consumption on the previous day touched record high with a demand of 5, 854 megawatt and consumption of 114. 1852 million units.

Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty urged the public to consider the unusual situation as a natural calamity and stand united to resolve the issue. He also directed consumers to cooperate with the KSEB by cutting down the electricity consumption to a maximum level, especially between 10 pm and 2 am. He also reminded that causing hindrance to the duty of KSEB staff and creating ruckus at KSEB offices will only upset the power sector of the State.
