Irinjalakuda, Guruvayur: Municipalities in Kerala are setting new standards in efficiency with the introduction of the K-SMART system, drastically reducing the time taken to issue important certificates. The Irinjalakuda Municipality has achieved a remarkable milestone, issuing birth certificates in just 6.45 minutes. This marks the first time in the state that such a quick issuance has been achieved. Similarly, Guruvayur Municipality also demonstrated impressive speed by issuing marriage certificates in 23.56 minutes.

Minister for Local Self-Government, M B Rajesh, took to social media to highlight the progress made by local bodies in embracing the K-SMART initiative. 

In Irinjalakuda, the registration procedure for birth certificates took just 6.45 minutes on February 29, 2024. This achievement was especially noteworthy, as the process was slightly delayed due to a correction, though the certificate issuance time was still remarkably quick. Officials explained that this was the first time a local body in Kerala had managed to issue a birth certificate in such a short time frame.

Guruvayur, a well-known hub for weddings, has also become a pioneer in certificate issuance. The Guruvayur Municipality now issues marriage certificates in less than 24 minutes, specifically, 23.56 minutes. This is an improvement for a town that hosts dozens of weddings daily, with the number rising to over 100 on Sundays. The municipality’s registration counter, which operates even on Sundays and public holidays, now ensures that couples receive their marriage certificates swiftly. Initially, marriage certificates were sent by courier, but a new system was introduced to provide certificates within an hour, which has now been further reduced to mere minutes.

Chairman M. Krishnadas credited the community's effort in reducing the time and convenience of the marriage certificate process. 

In Thiruvananthapuram, the Municipal Corporation has also excelled, issuing death certificates in just 8.54 minutes.
