‘CIAL 2.0’ to achieve full digitalisation with AI and automation.

Kochi: Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is moving steadily towards achieving complete digitalisation under its ambitious ‘CIAL 2.0’ initiative. With a project cost of ₹200 crore, the upgraded systems will incorporate artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and advanced cyber security technologies to streamline airport operations and enhance passenger experience.
The official inauguration of the project will be held on May 19 at 5 p.m., at the CIAL Convention Centre. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also serves as the Chairman of CIAL, will preside over the function.
Enhanced security and operational efficiency
The ‘CIAL 2.0’ programme is designed to significantly improve both operational efficiency and safety. The digital shift aims to offer faster, more accurate, and reliable services to passengers.
Managing Director S. Suhas described the initiative as “a new chapter in the growth of the airport.”
Key technological upgrades under 'CIAL 2.0'
1. Cyber Defence Operations Centre (C-DOC): The newly introduced C-DOC will manage all online systems and cyber security technologies locally. It is equipped to perform continuous monitoring, threat detection, and neutralisation of cyber attacks.
2. Full-body scanners and automated trays: To enable faster and contactless screening, full-body scanners are being introduced. The airport will also implement an Automated Tray Retrieval System to simplify the handling of cabin baggage during security checks.
3. AI-powered surveillance: A total of 4,000 AI-enabled cameras will be installed to strengthen surveillance in both operational and peripheral zones of the airport.
4. Modernised bomb disposal systems: Security infrastructure is being upgraded with advanced explosive detection and disposal technologies. Features include a liquid explosive detector and a threat containment vessel.
5. Upgraded digital infrastructure: Several critical systems are being overhauled, including the Airport Operational Database, Flight Information Display System, Flight Announcement System, Common Use Passenger Processing System, Data Centre, and Network Infrastructure.
Additional services will be enhanced through AI-based platforms, such as baggage tracking, facial recognition-based checks, lost item tracking, DigiYatra services, and prepaid taxi booking kiosks.
