Kerala authorities warn against consuming fish parts from Tamil Nadu after over 40 people fell ill from low-quality mackerel.

Poovar (Thiruvananthapuram): Authorities at Poovar Fisheries have issued a warning against consuming fish parts arriving from seafood export companies in Tamil Nadu. It was found that low-quality, unusable portions of fish were being sold in Kerala’s coastal areas.
On October 29, several people suffered food poisoning after consuming portions of mackerel fish along the coast. Subsequent inspections by the Food Safety Department revealed that the poisoning resulted from low-quality fish parts.
According to Poovar Fisheries Extension Officer, these unusable fish parts, intended for waste disposal in Tamil Nadu, were being transported to Kerala’s coastal areas for sale.
More than 40 people fell ill after consuming mackerel heads and parts sourced from Tamil Nadu. Following this, the Food Safety Department conducted further investigations and confirmed the presence of substandard fish parts in the coastal markets. Authorities have strongly advised against buying or consuming such fish portions.
