The government provides protection for deposits of up to ₹5 lakh in cooperative banks and societies, similar to commercial banks.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: The government has decided to publish a list of cooperative societies and banks whose deposits carry a government guarantee, making it available in the public domain. The list will be published on the Guarantee Fund Board's website.
Cooperative institutions that accept deposits but have not registered with the board have been given time until June 15. Institutions that fail to complete registration by submitting audit records and the guarantee contribution will not be included in the list of protected deposit institutions.
The new decision by the Cooperation Department follows the suicide of a depositor in Vadakara after he failed to recover his investment. The labour cooperative society that accepted the deposit was not a member of the Guarantee Fund Board.
The government provides protection for deposits of up to ₹5 lakh in cooperative banks and societies, similar to commercial banks. However, a large number of cooperative institutions have not registered with the board set up for this purpose.
