Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala High Court on Thursday directed the constitution of a Lakshadweep Judicial Administration and Infrastructure Committee to enhance the Union Territory’s judicial framework, Live Law reported.

A Special Bench, comprising Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Ziyad Rahman A.A., said the committee will include the Registrar General, Principal District Judge, District Collector, a nominee of the administrator, Superintendent of Police, Registrar (Computerisation), and a representative of NIC, according to the report.

Suo motu case addresses judicial challenges

The Bench was hearing a suo motu case aimed at tackling persistent challenges within Lakshadweep’s judicial system. The committee is expected to provide improved administrative and infrastructure support to the courts in the Union Territory.

The case was initiated following concerns over ongoing judicial infrastructure and staffing issues, caused by the geographical dispersion of the islands, being brought before the Court, Bar & Bench reported.

In January 2025, the administrative wing of the High Court noted that although Lakshadweep has 10 inhabited islands, court services are available on only three, creating obstacles for residents on other islands to access legal remedies for their grievances.
