Kerala faces a Hepatitis A surge with 5000+ cases and 35 deaths this year. Experts warn of contaminated food/water. Vaccination urged

Alappuzha: Concerns are mounting in the state as a significant rise in Hepatitis A (jaundice) cases has been reported in the health sector. More than 5,000 people have been infected this year alone, with 35 confirmed deaths so far. Though health experts stress that fatalities from Hepatitis A are extremely rare, the rising death toll is causing serious concern.
In comparison, 7,967 cases and 89 deaths were reported last year. In the years prior, annual deaths ranged only between 2 and 15. Contaminated water and unhygienic food habits are believed to be the major factors contributing to the spread of the virus.
Doctors are highly recommending vaccination as a preventive measure. However, uptake remains low, with most recipients being students applying for courses that require health certificates or those attending medical camps. Others are reluctant to get vaccinated, primarily due to the cost involved. Currently, the Hepatitis A vaccine is only available in the private sector and is not included in the central government’s list of free vaccinations.
A single dose of the vaccine can provide protection for up to a year, thereby helping to curb further transmission of the disease.
“Although Hepatitis A is not as severe as Hepatitis B, C, D, or E, it can pose serious threats to individuals with low immunity or underlying health conditions. In some cases, it can lead to complete liver failure and even death. Vaccination can significantly reduce both the mortality rate and spread of infection,” said Dr. S. Ranjith Kumar, Consultant Physician at Alappuzha General Hospital.
