Kochi: The Kerala High Court has directed the Cochin Devaswom Board to make a decision within two months regarding restrictions on video filming and mobile phone use within temples. The directive, issued by a bench that includes Justice Anil K. Narendran and Justice P.G. Ajithkumar, follows an ombudsman’s report based on a petition filed by a Thrissur resident. The petition raised concerns about the unrestricted video filming and mobile phone usage at the Sree Vadakkumnathan Temple and Thekkinkadu Maidanam in Thrissur.
The court highlighted the responsibility of the temple trustee or other persons in charge to uphold the traditional customs and practices associated with each temple. The bench noted that these customs must be observed strictly, ensuring temple officials and employees remain committed to fulfilling their roles effectively. In addition, the court underscored the need for proper facilities to be in place for the convenience of devotees visiting these sites.
Responding to the ombudsman’s report, the Devaswom manager informed the court that photography and videography within the Sree Vadakkumnathan Temple premises are prohibited unless specific permission is granted by the Cochin Devaswom Board and the Department of Archaeology. However, the manager added that wedding ceremonies are permitted on temple grounds, with an associated fee of Rs 720.
The manager also pointed out that the temple office lacks storage facilities for mobile phones.
