Kochi: In a serious judgment, the Kerala High Court has ruled that rolling coconuts on the Malikappuram premises and sprinkling turmeric powder in the temple vicinity at Sabarimala should not be permitted. Observing that these practices cause inconvenience to other devotees, the court pointed out that such activities are not part of the temple's traditional rituals. The Devaswom Bench, comprising Justices Anil K Narendran and S Muraleedharan, emphasised the need to create awareness among devotees regarding this matter.
The court also prohibited devotees from throwing clothes in the Malikappuram area, reiterating that these actions are not ritualistic practices. The bench noted that the Thantri (chief priest) himself has clarified this. It further directed temple authorities to make announcements informing devotees not to engage in such activities.
The High Court also suggested imposing restrictions on vloggers filming videos at Sabarimala. The court ordered that visuals or photographs should not be taken from the sacred Pathinettam Padi (the 18 holy steps). It, however, clarified that authorised individuals permitted by the Devaswom Board can document rituals and ceremonies.
