Palakkad (Kerala): The Kerala Government is planning to bolster the state-run Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) fleet by tapping into MLA Asset Development Funds, co-operative society reserves, and private sector sponsorships, Transport Minister C P John announced on Monday.

Speaking to journalists in Palakkad, the Minister pointed out that only 1,300 new buses were inducted into the public transport service over the past decade, creating an urgent need for fleet expansion.

He noted that the corporation's vehicles had lacked systematic reconditioning and overhauling over the years. To counter this shortage, 10 buses were recently refurbished, while efforts are now underway to procure new vehicles through local development funds, co-operative society reserves and external support.

“The government was also exploring the option of getting buses through sponsorship by others,” the Minister said.

Investigation ordered into fatal Pothundy bus crash

Addressing the fatal road accident at Pothundy in Palakkad district, Minister John confirmed that a formal crash analysis has been initiated. Preliminary inputs indicate that the bus was not carrying excess passengers. The driver swerved to avoid hitting a two-wheeler, resulting in the vehicle colliding with a roadside tree.

The accident resulted in the death of 53-year-old Jayanthi, while another passenger with severe rib injuries was transferred to Thrissur Medical College. Around 26 to 27 injured commuters were treated locally and subsequently discharged.

“Unfortunately, a 53-year-old woman, Jayanthi, died in the accident. One person with injuries to the ribs has been shifted to Thrissur Medical College. The other injured were treated here and 26-27 people have been discharged,” he told reporters.

“Financial assistance will be provided to the victims of the accident,” he added.

Among the injured were roughly 10 tea factory workers from West Bengal. The Minister instructed District Collectorate officials to extend special care and assistance to the migrant workers. A post-crash technical evaluation report is expected within five days to determine if mechanical issues or driver negligence caused the crash.

Grievances of private bus operators

Responding to concerns raised by private bus operators regarding business losses tied to the implementation of the 'Priyadarshini' free transit scheme for women, the Minister reassured operators that the government would address their operational challenges. The scheme, part of the UDF's election commitments, currently provides free rides for women exclusively on KSRTC's ordinary routes.
