Kochi: Having learned from the recent power crisis, Kerala is now preparing to significantly boost its power generation capacity. The state aims to achieve a target of 10 GW (10,000 MW) by 2030, an increase from the current capacity of 3.25 GW.

Over the past decade, Kerala has only managed to add 72 MW to its power generation capabilities. In response to this situation, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) director board has swiftly decided to appoint a two-member committee comprising technical experts.

Kerala has been facing an acute power crisis in recent times. During the five years’ peak demand (electricity required at night), there has been an increase of 1,600 MW. There was also an increase in electricity consumption by 300 crore units.

The KSEB evaluates that the rising use of AC and electric vehicles will be a future challenge. A total of 77 percent of the required electricity is procured from outside Kerala. At the same time, the KSEB is agreeing that 227 MW of hydropower projects are under construction. It is indicated that Pallivasal Extension and Thotiyar will be commissioned within two months.

The expert committee is being appointed because it will face big setbacks if there is further backwardness in electricity production. Civil works are moving slowly. The committee is being set up to resolve this.
