Munnar, Kerala: The Kerala Forest Department has issued a fresh warning after four wild elephants, including the well-known Padayappa, were observed in musth and moving into residential areas. Authorities have urged the public not to provoke the animals, stressing that even minor disturbances can trigger aggressive behaviour.

Frequent sightings along major routes

The elephants have been primarily spotted along key routes:

  • Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway: near the Government Botanical Garden, Signal Point, and Lakkad.
  • Munnar-Marayur Road: Periyavarai, Kannimala, and Ettam Mile.
  • Mattupetty Road: Flower Garden, Mattupetty Cattle Rearing Centre, and Ecopoint.

These movements often disrupt traffic. Recently, Padayappa caused significant crop damage after venturing into Chokkanad Estate.

Tourists and visitors warned

Officials have advised tourists and visitors not to block or approach the elephants, highlighting that even small provocation can lead to accidents.

“The forest department’s two Rapid Response Team (RRT) units are continuously monitoring the animals,” said authorities. “If elephants enter residential areas, teams are prepared to guide them back to the forest promptly.”

Safety measures for the public

The department has issued clear instructions for those in affected areas:

  • Do not provoke elephants.
  • Avoid stopping vehicles or sounding horns.
  • Do not take photographs or selfies near the animals.
  • Maintain a safe distance at all times.

Officials emphasise that interfering with the elephants not only endangers people but also hampers the work of RRT units.
