Kalikavu (Kerala): In a bizarre turn of events, Kerala's Forest and Wildlife Department has granted permission to shoot wild boars to a man who died two years ago. The list, prepared by the department and sent to the Kalikavu panchayat, names Unniri, a native of Poongode in Kalikavu, as the authorised individual for culling wild boars. However, Unniri passed away two years ago.
The mistake appears in the empanelled list issued by the Palakkad Forest Chief Conservator Officer to divisional forest offices. In the Nilambur South and North divisions, 51 individuals from 45 panchayats have been included in the list. Wild boar attacks are particularly severe in Kalikavu and Chokkad panchayats.
Over the past three months, more than ten people in Kalikavu have sustained injuries due to boar attacks. Despite the rising threat, only one person has been granted permission to shoot wild boars in Kalikavu and Chokkad. The forest department had issued the list without reviewing or updating it, leading to the glaring error.
