
Kochi: An engineering student lost her life on Saturday after a tree, uprooted by a wild elephant, fell on her and a friend in Neendapara, Kothamangalam. The incident left one student dead and another seriously injured.
The deceased has been identified as Ann Mary, aged 21, a native of Palakkad and a student at an engineering college in Kothamangalam. She was riding pillion on a motorbike driven by her classmate, Altaf (21). Altaf sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Kothamangalam Hospital.
The accident occurred while the duo was passing through Neendapara when a wild elephant, which had been roaming the area, uprooted a palm tree. The tree came crashing down onto their bike, causing the fatal accident.
Locals, along with forest officials, rushed to the scene, moved the fallen tree, and rescued the students. Both were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where Ann Mary was declared dead.
Altaf is receiving treatment for his injuries at a hospital in Kothamangalam.
Ann Mary’s body has been shifted to Kalamassery Medical College.
