Thiruvananthapuram: A high-level meeting convened by Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty has decided to take disciplinary action against officials found responsible for any electrical accident. This will be based on the report of the Chief Electrical Inspector. Six people have died in separate such incidents, which were discussed during the meeting.

The investigation conducted by the KSEB Chief Safety Commissioner into the electrocution of a student in Thevalakkara did not recommend any action against the employees. KSEB employees had previously requested the relocation of the overhead line above the school and the installation of a supporting post. The investigation concluded that the accident occurred before these actions could be implemented. However, the report from the Chief Electrical Inspector is still awaited. If it reveals any lapses, appropriate action will be taken.

It was decided to form a district-level committee with the Collector as chairman and the deputy chief engineer as convener to review electricity safety, along with alert committees led by MLAs and ward members. However, these committees have not been meeting. They are to be convened before August 15. A proposal by KSEB chairman Mir Mohammed Ali to develop software for recording inspections of electricity lines, identifying risks and tracking follow-up actions was approved.

Only armoured conductors will be used for new electricity lines. It was also decided to remove cables that have been illegally drawn from electricity poles. Additional chief secretary of the Energy Department Puneeth Kumar, chief electrical inspector G Vinod and energy management centre director R Harikumar also attended the meeting.
