The Forest Department has initiated a comprehensive study to ensure the scientific management of ecotourism centres across the state. The study will assess visitor capacity, conduct safety audits, and evaluate the facilities and conditions of these tourist centres. Based on the findings, measures will be introduced to limit the number of tourists, regulate visiting hours, and possibly revise entry rates during peak times.
Expressions of interest have been invited for the study, covering 12 prominent ecotourism centres in Kerala.
Currently, centres that typically receive around a thousand visitors on regular days experience a surge of up to 10–15 times more during holiday seasons. For instance, Ponmudi in Thiruvananthapuram, which usually accommodates about 500 visitors daily, witnesses an influx of 1.5 to 3 lakh visitors monthly during peak periods.
Kerala has 80 forest-related tourist centres under the Forest Department, drawing over one crore visitors annually. The study will also evaluate the maximum number of visitors that can be allowed at each location, considering available recreational facilities. Additionally, the scope includes examining private recreational centres in the vicinity.
The Forest Department aims to enhance safety measures, eliminate unsafe areas, and provide essential facilities while ensuring minimal environmental impact.
